My journey into exotic gardening began in 1994 when I bought my very first palm—a Trachycarpus fortunei—from a Leeds garden centre. It was just 2 feet tall and cost around £12.50, but that small purchase ignited a lifelong passion. That same palm even came with me when I moved to the East Midlands and today it towers over 20 feet—an enduring reminder of where it all began.

Determined to transform my front and rear gardens into a tropical paradise, I began experimenting with a wide variety of palms, all grown from seed. The process itself was a fascinating journey of trial, error, and discovery. I vividly remember a harsh winter in the late 1990s when snow blanketed the region, covering cars, and many of my young palms didn’t survive. While that was disappointing, it was an invaluable learning experience.

Throughout the years, I’ve had countless conversations with passionate gardeners and horticulture experts. Many were skeptical at first, warning me that my tropical ambitions were impossible—but I always ignored the naysayers. I also developed strong relationships with forward-thinking garden centres, exchanging knowledge and learning more about outdoor palms, Yuccas, banana plants, and other exotic species.

What started as a hobby has become a lifelong journey and my greatest passion. Today, I’m dedicated to sharing my experience, helping others bring a touch of the tropics into their own gardens.
